I chose to create a contemporary version of the parting of the Red Sea, from the book of Exodus. In this graphic, symbols are used to communicate the event in a dramatic, bold, and intelligent way. The parting waves are done as a hard edge graphic. This plays off against a background that almost looks like sand, as would be on the shores of a sea.

From the bottom, between the parting waves, an arrow appears pointing up, towards the tablets. This symbolizes the direction the Israelites traveled through the sea and their destination.

Above the tablets is the head of Moses, which was taken from the famous sculpture by Michelangelo. All of the elements are done in different styles so that they rub off against each other; this creates visual tension and interest.
