La Familia Sagrada

December 1996
9-1/2 x 12 inches

“La Familia Sagrada” was inspired by a folk art nativity piece (Mexican nacimiento) that I bought during the Christmas season at a traffic round-about outside of Guadalajara, Mexico. Diapers and clothing hang on the holy family’s clothes line. Mary and Joseph admire Jesus, and curious farm animals look on.

This watercolor provokes a sense of pleasure and contentment, as well as a bit of humor. I am reminded of the joys and blessings of Christmas, and how it began. It also illustrates the realities of every day life, both in Bethlehem and in Texas.
