The Holy Trinity
by Elizabeth Porter
(Egg tempera and gold leaf on gessoed board, 2004, 15" x 13")

The Bible recounts that Abraham and Sarah were visited by 3 strangers (messengers of God) who told them to expect a baby and a wonderful heritage despite their advanced age. Abraham and Sarah welcomed them with a meal served under the oak trees.

In this traditional icon, the Holy Trinity is depicted symbolically as these three messenger angels, in harmonious and thoughtful discussion, seated outdoors under an oak tree, around a table with bread and wine. The inscription around the edges was selected to emphazie the interdependence of all creation, modeled on the mutual relationship of the Holy Trinity.
