Good Friday
by Mary Mayer
Photography, 2007

These images so clearly evoke Jesus on the cross, Good Friday, they require little explanation.  Or do they?

As a Christian, I think of Good Friday as an attitude and an approach to life.   Let me explain.

As Christians, we are often called upon to make choices which demonstrate our Faith.   Sometimes the choices are easy:  losing our place in line to help someone find a seat; they smile; we feel good.   We easily remember feeling warm or generous at those times.

Other times the choices require the complete laying bare of our souls:  total darkness, aloneness, groping, searching, wanting for "it" to go away. We cannot go any further in our own strength, so we pray.   We pray with every fiber of our soul ~ we reach our hand out to God like the tendrils on this cross and the new life engulfs us, fills us, and we understand. We transcend our pain. We choose God.

I have come to think of these passages in my prayer life as my Good Friday moments.
