Suzanne Schleck

"Guide us waking, O Lord, and guard us sleeping; that awake we may watch with Christ, and asleep we may rest in peace." (From Compline)

The image of Christ constantly watching over his beloved creation, and watching in a judgment of love, not condemnation, is one I find most powerful. This word image in Compline is expressed with equal power in the icon of the Holy Face. This icon of the face of Christ coming to us from eternity is one I have painted (written) over and over. Each time I complete it with the sense of having met the deepest YES in life. And with
that meeting, I can, indeed, rest in peace.

I have been writing icons since 1989, studying with the Rev. John Walsted, as well as Robert Lentz and the Prosopon School of Iconology. More of my work can be seen on Father Walsted's website: www.walstedicons.com. I am a public school art teacher and in 2000 received a grant/fellowship for artist/educators from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation. I was leader of the workshop "Icons: the Gospel in Line and Color" at Kanuga Conference Center in February, 2005, and will do so again in February, 2006.
