In December 2001, I worked with a model who had been working down at the site of the attack as a volunteer. The experience had affected him deeply and we agreed to set up the pose in a way that would be meaningful to him. He brought in the protective gear he had been wearing, we set up the pose and I started painting.

I'm not sure if the haunted look is his or mine.
