Curators' Statement

The Board of Directors of Episcopal Church and Visual Art ask you to share in the experience of Holy Presence through the art of some of our artists. Take each work as a time for centering yourself in the Holy Mystery and the Holy Presence of God. Each artist statement can be read as lectio, savor exactly what each artist has to say. There is a lot of discussion among us artists about positive and negative space. In our world of art, the positive space is the actual image that you see; but it is in the negative space where the shadows fall and the light is more obscure where we begin to make sense of the story and it is the darkness that leads us to the light.

As artists, our art is how we tell our story and our art is how we share our faith. Throughout the history of the Church, it is the art that has sustained the church and kept the story alive and new. Through the practice of art, we, as artists, are able to tap into the creative mind of God through centering and contemplation. We welcome all artists and those interested in the intersection of art and faith to join our ECVA community. We offer online conversations. We have a contemplative painters guild. We have a growing number of artists producing work in film, video, and photography. And, we have the online exhibitions for you to share your work, and these resources are readily available for parishes to use. People lament that the church is diminishing in size. No, many of us are here, in our studios, talking about art and faith among ourselves. We would love for you to join us and we would love for our parishes and dioceses to support our mission. So, during this season of Epiphany, this exhibition, Holy Presence, is our gift to you and to the Church, and we pray that the Holy Presence of God will guide us and be with us in this new year.
