The Annunciation

Bronze sculpture

Artist Statement: This Annunciation represents the appearance of the Holy Spirit to an awed Mary. Mary does not sit shyly with eyes cast down but dares to gaze, with awe and joy, at the approaching Spirit. She gestures humbly at herself with her left hand while her right hand reaches out gently to accept and unite with the streaming flame descending from Above. (Some viewers see the stream as made of feathers or leaves, and that’s fine too.) The composition describes S-shapes from several viewpoints, and the base includes a low relief of Mary’s frequent attribute of white lilies.

Bio: I have been making and exhibiting bronze sculptures since 1991, and over the years my work has developed into several distinct bodies of work ranging from entirely figurative to entirely abstract, with various combinations in between. Some of the works have dealt with bibilical subjects.
br> I made this piece shortly after a visit to Spain, where the number of Annunciation images I encountered gave me the push I needed to engage a subject that had been of interest to me for some years. I tried to incorporate what seemed to be essential traditional elements in the composition while also bringing some freshness and originality. The resulting piece is both realist and abstract.
