Catherine Gibbs

Sanctuary

Artist Statement: This painting is inspired by a trip I took to the Tuscany region of Italy. It is not based on a particular place but by the experience of resting in the several beautiful churches and cathedrals on my journey. As I was trekking through the busy and hot streets of the towns in Tuscany, I found peace in the cool and shade of the immense sanctuaries I came across. I felt these times to be a sacred refuge. I was in awe of the exquisite beauty created in devotion to God. This was a life changing experience for me, my faith, and has influenced my art immeasurably.
