God of Scripture, God of Creation, God of the Altar, One God

Photograph

Artist Statement: Monthly I lead Caminamos con Dios Hikes in which we celebrate the Eucharist with opening acclamation at the trailhead, and share hymns, readings, silence, reflections, prayers, and Liturgy of the Table as we hike. I base the concept on the teachings of St. Francis that God offers and invites us to know God through two Bibles: Scripture and Creation.

The name translates, “We walk with God” and comes from my wife, Diane, and I walking the 489-mile El Camino de Compestela. Each morning as we stepped on the path, we reminded us what and why we were doing by saying, “Caminamos con Dios.”

On one of my hikes after arranging for the Liturgy of the Table, holding my attention was the simplicity and unity of sunlight, nature, remnants of an old rough-hewn fence, an old round table (from unknown source), chalice, and paten, and eucharistic stole, all affirming the words of St. Francis.

Bio: I have loved photography the past 45 years but, as with many of our joys, it got neglected among other priorities: being a father and husband, mental health center CEO, and then parish priest. Now retired from full time parish ministry, I have more time for photography and hiking, with the two intertwined. I live in and hike the mountains and waterfalls of western North Carolina with my wife, Diane. Believing that seeing through a lens provides a new way to see the world or seeing the world as I think God sees it, I photograph what holds my attention in nature or wherever I happen to be hiking. I’ve had photographs included in Soul by Southwest, published by the Seminary of the Southwest.
