St. John in Mourning, detail of "Crucifix" icon

Tempera and gold leaf on wood; 4' by 4'

2007

The Christian journey is powerfully expressed in the faces of the saints who have sought and found the Incarnate God. For 2,000 years icons have attempted to show how women and men can be transfigured by returning to Love.

We can easily imagine John the young fisherman, eager for life. A mere three years later, he stands at the foot of the Cross (the first icon), utterly changed. His face is eloquent beyond words of all that has transpired in so short a time.
