The Color of Sand: Footprints
(Oil on canvas, 36" x 66")

Color of Sand
(Excerpt)

III.

Go, my child.
Brother sun is rising
and for many years
will yet rise on you.
The spirit of the wind
moves the sand
and covers me even
in your memory,
even as our footprints
are swept away
before the sun goes to rest
beyond the great forest.
My hunting is done.
My bones
cry out for sleep.
I go to be
with the old ones.
Be not sad for me.
The spirit of the sun
gives you warmth.
The spirit of the wind
gives you breath.
The spirit of the earth
fills you with strength
and brings meat and corn
for you and your children.
It is day now.
Go.
