After He Had Supped

Photograph

Artist Statement: “The Lord Jesus, after he had supped with his disciples and had washed their feet, said to them, “Do you know what I, your Lord and Master, have done to you? I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done.” From the Maundy Thursday liturgy, p. 274, Book of Common Prayer.

When I was composing this photograph in the Yemrehana Krestos Church, a cave church outside of Lalibela, Ethiopia, I was struck by how it was reminiscent of my imagined image of the disciples meeting in the Upper Room at the Last Supper. While the common image is that of Jesus and the disciples sitting around the table, it's likely that beforehand they were in discussion and engaging in camaraderie. This image hopefully conveys such a feeling of warmth and attention behind the open door.

Bio: Chuck Kirchner is a photographer and workshop leader based in Tucson, Arizona (having recently relocated from Bainbridge Island, Washington). His subjects include rituals, dance, spirituality, and world cultures. The range of photographs represents the spirit of the places Chuck has had the privilege of visiting over the years and the people met along the way. The challenge for the photographer is to convey the emotional sense of being there - from serene and solemn to sensual and exuberant. Chuck’s photographs have the ability to capture the season, the sensations, the memories and, most importantly, the spirit of place and of life. The tools of the trade involve technical acumen, artistic vision, patience, good timing, and, of course, a bit (or lot) of serendipity.
